Betting on the Super Bowl - All You Need to Know

Published

With another American Football season approaches its climax, we take a look at how to make the most of one of the sporting world's biggest events from a betting perspective.

While the Super Bowl is the most-watched sporting event in the United States, its reach extends far beyond its home country. Recently, this has become a global event with interest from all over the world.

The 2025 NFL season is heading toward its biggest showdown, with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs battling it out for Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9.

Betting Basics

The increased attention surrounding the Super Bowl has also boosted the betting industry. The NFL has a massive following in the community; many will have already considered their options for this season’s big game.

For those looking to take a bet on the Super Bowl at this stage, there are now just those two teams left in the hat. Staking on the winner of any long-running sporting event is known as a futures bet in the US and an outright in the UK and Europe, and now we’ve reached the climax, your task is to select one of the two remaining teams.

The prices of the Chiefs and the Eagles have been narrowing to make them the much-fancied favorites for a few weeks now, so their appearance in the Super Bowl is no surprise.

Their shortening odds have meant that the sportsbooks view them as the strong teams and the ones most likely to lift the trophy, and now they’ve reached the Super Bowl we’re left with just one final match to bet on.

Match Betting

Along with futures betting, the Moneyline option is the most straightforward. It’s a simple bet on the match result, and in the Super Bowl, that means a choice between the two best teams. Picking the winner may not be easy, but all you have to do here is select between the Chiefs and the Eagles.

The current odds to win Super Bowl LIX show the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs as the slight odds-on favourites to clinch an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl, but the Eagles are only marginally above even money in what is a very tight market.

The odds shown next to each franchise tell us two things. They indicate the probability of a team winning and the returns you would receive should your bet succeed.

At the time of writing, the price of the Chiefs winning is currently an odds-on 4/5 (1.80 decimal, -125 US moneyline), so if you want to stake £20, your returns will be £36, making £16 profit on top of your original stake.

This is betting in its basic match-winner form, and it’s a great place to start for anyone new to the markets. If you want to take things further, there are many additional options.

There is some research you can carry out, which we’ll cover shortly, but remember that favourites don’t always win. Every sport has delivered surprise results, and the Super Bowl is no exception, especially when there appears to be so little to choose between the two teams.

Other Bet Types to Consider

Other betting options are a little more complex than futures and money lines. Remember that virtually any aspect of the Super Bowl game can lead to a betting market.

There are winning margin handicap bets, as well as totals bets on different periods. For example, you can stake the total number of points scored by the two teams over the entire match. Totals bets can also appear for each of the four quarters of the Super Bowl and can be applied to each individual team.

Other bets are defined as props, and this term is short for ‘proposition.’ A prop bet essentially proposes that something might happen in the game. For example, the Super Bowl always generates a market for the first player to score a touchdown.

There may also be options for the first team to score points and whether the match goes into overtime. The range of props will vary between operators, but there will always be a vast array of options for such a big event.

Essential Strategies

No matter what Super Bowl bets you consider, some essential research must be undertaken. Those odds indicate favourites and underdogs, but serious bettors will prefer to target something much more profound.

What does the recent form tell us about the teams? What about any head-to-head results between the franchises? Recent contests between the two sides might help you identify some patterns.

It’s also OK to follow tipsters but study their records and make sure their stats are fully verified before staking any real money against their advised bets.

Being prepared gives you a better chance when approaching the Super Bowl markets. Understanding the available bets is a key starting point, and the important research will help you be better informed when making your choices.
